Charges are pending for two people from New York for their involvement in scamming a White County resident.

According to a press release from White County Sheriff Captain Clay Hammond, the scam involved the scammers telling the victim that a young relative was in need of money or had been involved in an accident. WCSO identified the suspects as Brandon Massey, 23, from Queens, New York, and Jamal Davis 28, from Queens, New York. Charges of exploitation of the elderly and theft by deception, both of, which are felonies, are pending against the two because they have not been booked in White County. Massey and Davis are currently being held for similar charges in the Hall County Detention Center.

“In this case, the suspects contacted the victim with confidence and had information that made the victim truly believe the suspects were talking about their family member,” the release said. “The suspects gave the victim instructions and stayed in contact with them throughout the incident. The suspects came to the victim’s residence in person, but took steps to avoid being detected. The suspects in these type of cases often ask for large sums of money and will often make additional attempts to get more money, if they’re initially successful.”

The sheriff's office is reminding people to verify information through local law enforcement if an arrest is mentioned, and to never give out a home address to someone you don't personally know.
