The Rev. Loyd Martin, 87, of Cleveland, passed away Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022, at the Oaks at Scenic View in Baldwin.

The Rev. Martin was born May 22, 1935, he was the son of the late Sid and Ellen Martin. He served with honor in the United States Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Algene Freeman Martin; brothers, Hugh Martin and Ray Martin; and sister, Evelyn Pardue.

The Rev. Martin was "Papa Loyd" to all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They all knew how much he loved and cared for them.

He worked hard all of his life, but his love was being called into the ministry. He often said what an honor it was that God had that much confidence in him. For 50 years he was a humble servant and the very definition of a pastor. He was always on call and always available to his congregations. He said many times that you couldn't out give God. The desire to preach Gods' word burned within him even until his last days. He longed to see his Savior, and as of the past four months, his precious wife. Welcome home thy good and faithful servant.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Cherri and Joe Morrison of Cleveland, Holly and Kerry Smith of Aubrey, Texas, and Ginger and Jesse Thomas of Evans; as well as seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and now is helping "MamaGene" in Heaven babysitting Oliver and Grayson. Also, he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Harlan and Regina Martin of Hartwell; brother, Royce Martin of Cleveland; and sister, Joyce Pilgrim.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 20, at Chattahoochee Baptist Church. The Rev. Chris Anderson and the Rev. Lee Cantrell officiated. Interment followed in Chattahoochee Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Martin lied in state from 1until 2 p.m. at Chattahoochee Baptist Church, prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chattahoochee Baptist Church building fund or the Gideon International Bible Ministry.
