Learn about mushrooms and other fungi at Smithgall Woods State Park. Join us for a fungus presentation and hike with Julia Kerrigan, associate professor of mycology at Clemson University. Meet in the visitor's center at 9 a.m., then head out for a hike. Cost is $15 if pre-paid, $20 after Aug. 21. Call 706-878-3087 for registration and information.

Friday, Aug. 28

• Friends of Hardman Farm Monthly Meeting. Join the newly formed "Friends of Hardman Farm" for a casual but very dynamic discussion of projects and opportunities for Hardman Farm. Meetings occur on the fourth Friday of each month, 9-11 a.m.

• Friends of Hardman Farm Open House. Learn about the volunteer opportunities and projects that are organized by Friends of Hardman Farm. Short tours of the old general store and post office will be available. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome! 4 – 6 p.m.

• Saturday night concert series at Unicoi State Park and Lodge. Thomas Folk and Story teller will be playing at 8 p.m. Admission is free. There is a "pass the hat" donation taken for the band at the door.

Tuesday, Sept. 1

• Seniors at the Center at Sautee Nacoochee Center. Join us for our first luncheon following the summer break. Guest speakers, Joanne Steele, Andrew Linker, and Bob Brooksher, will share the 400-mile journey down the Savannah River to assess its health, meet its people, and raise awareness of threats this great river faces. We will begin with a potluck lunch, so please bring a dish to share. Decaf coffee, water, paper plates and plastic utensils will be available.

• The Workforce Development Career Coach will be at the White County Library in Cleveland from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Operated by the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission (GMRC), in conjunction with Georgia Mountains Workforce Development, the bus offers computers and Internet access to help people in online job searches. There is also skills testing and a mock interview simulation. Jobseekers can get help with resumes and cover letter development, career interest assessments and use skill enhancing software.

Saturday, Sept. 12

• White County Farmers Market at Freedom Park, Cleveland. 7 a.m. to noon or sellout. Melon mania. Melon Vendors, please donate a couple of your melons that can be cut and sampled by patrons. Honeydew melons, cantaloupe, and watermelons are welcome. We will try to get a seed-spitting contest going as well!

• Family Promise Mountain Mud Run will be held at Far Winds Farm, 3307 Sandy Flats Road, Cleveland. The 5K Mud Run is a fund raiser for Family Promise of White and Habersham counties, the organization dedicated to helping homeless children and low-income families achieve independence. • The Cleveland Care Center will have a fundraiser gala dinner at Mt Yonah Baptist Church. The center will soon be offering ultrasounds for clients free of charge. • Youth Fishing Day at Buck Shoals, offered by Smithgall Woods State Park. 8 a.m. to noon. $5 park pass per vehicle. Children and their special “big person” can fish in a lake stocked with catfish, bass and bream. This is the final youth fishing day of the year. • Helpful Herbs at Smithgall Woods State Park Visitor’s Center. 10 a.m. to noon. Saturday, September 19th, 10:00 -12:00 PM at the Visitor's Center. • Friends of Unicoi invite you to "Poetry in the Park" with Mildred Greear, at 1 p.m. at Unicoi State Park in the Amphitheater. Because of the great response in May we have scheduled 2 more sessions with Mildred Greear. It is a delightful experience to sit with Mildred to listen to readings or participate with your own poetry.
