A two-vehicle accident on Ga. 115 on Saturday, July 20, claimed the life of a 65-year-old Florida woman.

According to Sgt. First Class A.J. Allen, with Georgia State Patrol Post 6, a 2007 Freightliner Tractor pulling a 53 foot trailer and 2001 GMC Savanna van were involved in the accident that occurred on Ga. 115 near Dock Dorsey Road. The 18-wheeler was being driven by James Martin, 46, of Cleveland, and the van was being driven by Catherine Grant-Coons, of Tavares, Florida.

The Freightliner Tractor was heading west on Ga. 115, and as Martin approached traffic, he braked aggressively to try and avoid a collision, Allen stated. This caused the tractor to jackknife, rotate counter clockwise and travel into the eastbound lane. The right front corner of the tractor hit the front of the van, which was traveling in the eastbound lane.

Grant-Coons was fatally injured in the crash. Martin was uninjured, and charges are pending at this time, Allen said.

Ga. 115 was shut down for approximately six hours between Lothridge Road and Dock Dorsey Road, he stated.
