Beginning in October, the White County Water Authority is making some changes to their billing cycle.

Meters will be read on the first of the month, and bills will now be due on the 28th of the month, said WCWA Executive Director Edwin Nix. Readings were previously taken on the 15th of the month. The WCWA decided to make the change because of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) requiring reading reports at the first of the month.

“We were having to do that and then having to turn around and read meters to bill off of again,” Nix said. “As short-handed as we are around here, I don’t have the staff to read meters twice a month. It’s just too much trouble. Now we can do it all at one time.”

Because of this change, there will be no readings in September, and meters will be read again on Oct. 1.

“On that first billing there will be an extra two weeks water on that bill,” Nix said. “...so that first one will be six weeks of water instead of four weeks of water when we change over.”

Information about the change will be sent to customers with their next water bill. With these changes, not only will meters be read on the first of the month, but on that same day a 10% penalty charge will be posted on all past due amounts. For customers whose bill is currently autodrafted, their bills will still come out on the 15th of the month. Bills for all other customers will be due on the 28th of the month.

Customers who would like to enroll in autodraft can call the WCWA at 706-865-0788, visit www.whitecountywater.org, or go by the WCWA office at 179 Claude Sims Road, Cleveland.
