Coasting ‘round the mountain

Georgia Mountain Coaster officially opens in Helen

The long-awaited Georgia Mountain Coaster has opened in Helen.

The coaster opened last weekend and will be operating on the weekends for now, said owner Terry Sims, who owns Cool River Tubing and Cool River Adventures with his wife, Terri Sims.

“I thought [having a coaster] would be a good thing,” he said. “White county, Helen, and this area, we need more for people to do. The more you have, the more people will do.”

The coaster is open, but there is still work to be done to the office building and the parking lot, along with hiring additional staff, he said. But, the coaster, track and stairs from the city are done, so Sims decided to open for the summer.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For now, the coaster is open Friday through Sunday, but it will open during the week at a later date. Part of the delay is so work on the building and parking lot can continue, Sims said.

The cost is $15 per person for the first ride, and the second ride that same day will be half off. Kids must be at least 38 inches tall to ride. The coaster is located at 8409 S. Main St., Helen. Patrons can walk to the coaster from downtown, the path begins at the stairs next to Paul’s on the River.

Once everything is complete, a grand opening will be held, Sims said. For more information and to keep up to date on days open, visit georgiamountaincoaster.com or find them on Facebook by searching Georgia Mountain Coaster.
