The year is off to a great start for Alpine Helen.
Not only is the town celebrating its 50th anniversary year of being an Alpine Village, it’s also featured on the front of the 2019 Explore Georgia Travel Guide.
The image features one of Helen’s most popular attractions – tubing the Chattahoochee River – in a scene capturing the Bavarian stylings of the city against a mountain background.
An unveiling event was held on Monday, Feb. 4 at the Atlanta History Center and was attended by over 600 tourism professionals, along with elected officials, said Jerry Brown, executive director of the Alpine Helen/White County Georgia Convention & Visitors Bureau. Gov. Brian Kemp did the official reveal on the steps of the capitol in front of his office on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
“They wanted to promote the mountains and since we are the third most-visited area in the state, we were blessed to be the state’s choice,” Brown said. “The Tourism Division (of the Georgia Department of Economic Development), along with the publisher of the Travel Guide – Atlanta Magazine/Custom Media – actually came to Helen to do the photo shoot last summer.”
Brown said it’s a huge honor to have Helen on the cover of the state’s official travel guide and hopes it will encourage more people to visit the city.
Among those attending the unveiling were Brown, White County Chamber of Commerce President Beth Truelove, Helen Mayor Cinnamon Spurlock, White County Commission Chairman Travis Turner, County Manager Mike Melton, county Economic Development Director John Sell, Cool River Tubing owner Teri Sims, CVB board member and BabyLand General Hospital marketing director Margaret McLean, CVB board vice chair and Helendorf River Inn owner Catherine Cleiman, and state Sen. Steve Gooch.
