Repair work continues on Helen to Hardman Trail
Repairs to the Helen to Hardman Trail are apparently going well, despite lingering bouts of rainfall.
That’s according to Will Wagner, general manager of both Smithgall Woods State Park and the Hardman Farm State Historic Site. The trail closed at the end of January this year to fix damage that was caused by storms in summer 2018. Work is being done to reinforce fallen slopes and repair guardrails.
Wagner previously said the plan to fix the trail was to put in gabion baskets, which are the same things that the river naturally uses to sustain its riverbanks. He said stones are carved out on the side of the river that serves as a retaining wall. The baskets are being installed at several locations on the riverbank, which would allow water to flow through the walls. The rock installation is still being done, and the re-vegetation has not yet begun.
An opening date has not been set yet. Wagner said he hopes the work will be done by early summer, or possibly by the Fourth of July weekend.
Besides weather, another reason for delays is people trespassing on the trail while the work is being done, Wagner said. He asks everybody to please stay off the trail while the work is being done.
