Hubert Monroe James
Hubert Monroe James, 91, of Cleveland, Georgia, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019.
Hubert was born on July 7, 1927, to Martin Luther James and Cora Martin James. He was the youngest and last survivor of six children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 69 years, Oma Lee James, and his teenage son, Dennis James.
Hubert is survived by two daughters, Deborah James of Mineral Bluff, Georgia, and Bonita Roberts (Oscar Roberts III) of Cleveland, Georgia; grandchildren Oscar Roberts IV of South Dakota, and Helen Roberts of Carrollton, Georgia, and great-granddaughter Heather Roberts of Mississippi.
Hubert and Oma Lee lived in Flowery Branch, Georgia, until 2004, when they moved to Cleveland, Georgia. He retired after a 30-year career at General Motors.
For 62 years Hubert was a loyal and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Flowery Branch, where he served as an ordained deacon for 27 of those years. After moving to Cleveland, he joined Mt. Yonah Baptist Church.
Some of Hubert's favorite times were spent in his vegetable and flower gardens. He was known for his immaculate yard and azaleas which graced the neighborhood. When he wasn't in his garden, he volunteered at the Good Samaritan Food Bank in Gainesville, Georgia, and with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program - Georgia Mountains. He loved the challenge of repairing radios and owned over 100 in his collection.
A service to celebrate Hubert's life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Mt. Yonah Baptist Church in Cleveland, Georgia. The family will be receiving friends and relatives at the church between noon and 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the building fund of Mt. Yonah Baptist Church (706-865-5044), Eagle Ranch (770-967-8800), or your favorite charity.
