James Edwards Whitfield
James Edwards Whitfield of Cleveland passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at his residence. He was 79.
Mr. Whitfield was born Aug. 21, 1938, in Fulton County, to the late Thomas Pickett Whitfield and Billie Edwards Whitfield. James was a member of Cleveland United Methodist Church, and the Kiwanis Club, where he was named the 1985 Kiwanian of the Year in Daytona Beach.
He attended Florida University and the University of Florida. He was also an avid golfer. Mr. Whitfield worked for the United States Postal Service, where he served as Postmaster. He was named Special Olympics volunteer of the year from 1984-1985.
James and Shirley moved from Daytona Beach, Florida, to Palatka, Florida, then to Cleveland in 2006.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, Tommy and William.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Bunny) Whitfield of Cleveland; children, Deborah Ann Madsen of Clear Lake, Iowa, Jennifer Lee Vaughn of Palatka, Florida, and James Gregory Whitfield of Clear Lake, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Ernestine Whitfield of Zephyrhills, Florida; grandchildren, Christopher James Vaughn, Madonna Leigh Medeiros, Paul Michael Whitfield, Brad Mitchell Whitfield, Jacqueline Victoria Vaughn, and Jennifer Elizabeth Vaughn; and great-grandchildren, Addyson Joan Whitfield, Nolan Marcus Hall, Easton Michael Whitfield, and Jayline Lee Mayo.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Dawsonville.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home.
