The White County News team brought home multiple awards from the Georgia Press Association’s 2023 Better Newspaper Contest.
The contest was for work published in 2022. Winners were announced Friday during the association’s 136th annual convention in Jekyll Island.
Sports Editor Mark Turner won third place in the Sports Coverage category for his coverage of the Philyaw camp and local athletes.
Emory Jones’ tales of Cunningham’s adventures as an aspiring actor won over the judges. He won third place in the Humorous Column category.
“I am proud that both Mark and Emory were recognized for their work and talent,” Editor Samantha Sinclair said. “It is especially an honor this year as our paper was in a transition year for much of its staff.”
Sinclair, who became editor of the White County News in December 2022, also won two awards for her work as a reporter at the Franklin County Citizen Leader in Lavonia.
She received third place in the News Photo category and first place in Education Writing.
Entries in the contest were judged in six divisions based on circulation in daily and weekly divisions.
Entries for both newspapers were competing against other weekly newspapers across the state with a circulation of 2,000 to 3,799.
There were 490 awards presented in 46 categories to 61 newspapers.
