The White County News is the winner of six awards in the Georgia Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

The News received first place in Lifestyle Coverage category. A judge wrote that the coverage “... captures the lifestyle and culture of this community well. Engaging imagery, headlines and overall content.”

Sports Editor Mark Turner won a pair of awards, earning second place in the Sports Section or Pages category and third place for Sports Photo.

“Just as Mark has been a mainstay of local sports coverage in White County, the quality of his reporting and photograph continues to recognized year after year by judges in the newspaper industry,” says News Editor & Publisher Wayne Hardy.

Reporter Stephanie Hill also earned third place in the Education Writing category.

“There is much to keep tabs on when it comes to local schools, and Stephanie has done well keeping our community informed of the various happenings and issues related to policy and our students,” Hardy said.

The News received second place in the Special Issues/Special Section category for its Celebrating Women in Business special section, published in October 2020, that highlighted the stories and success of local business leaders.

Local columnist Emory Jones won third place in Humorous Column for his fictitious tales about the mischievous pet pig, Cunningham. It is the second straight year Jones’ columns have won an award.

“We’re fortunate to have talented contributors like Emory, who is a master storyteller that leaves readers eager for his next installment,” Hardy said.
