A White County boy’s wish for a pool came true thanks to Make-A-Wish Georgia.
Trevor Thompson, 14, was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease. His nana, Lisa Hall, said he has had over 300 broken bones between fractures and breaks.
Aqua therapy has been helpful for Trevor. With the family’s permission, his teacher Jessi Biddy wrote a letter to Make-A-Wish Georgia a few years ago. Trevor had to choose whether he wanted to go somewhere, meet someone or get something. He decided on a pool because of how beneficial water therapy has been for him – and because he loves swimming.
“It’s water therapy, which means after I break I can just get in it and it will help me a lot,” Trevor said. “I’m a fish in water.”
“That is what his orthopedic surgeon [approved], because I would take him everywhere swimming just for his therapy and a lot of places didn’t take his insurance,” Hall said. “So it was just hit and miss, and go here and there … [Water therapy] really helps and it strengthens his bones too. It just keeps him moving and motivated.”
It took three years, but Hall said the organization kept in touch with the family. The pool was installed last September, but the family didn’t open it until the spring.
“They came back and opened it and got it ready,” Hall said. “They had the guys come and do the ramp, and it was ready.”
A little party was held with Make-A-Wish Georgia on July 27, when the deed of ownership was officially given to Trevor.
“I love it,” Trevor said.
“He was really excited,” Hall said. “He wanted to get in it the day they put it up.”
For Biddy, who wrote the letter, she was very happy to see him get the pool.
“Seeing Trevor receive the pool was such a heart-warming experience,” Biddy said. “Trevor is an amazing young man who has changed my life and who will do great things. I am so thankful I was given the opportunity to be a part of his life story.”
