The Cleveland City Council approved a short-term rental ordinance and related zoning amendment at its March 14 meeting, setting rules and offering more opportunities for temporary lodging.
The zoning amendment will allow short-term rentals in the residential districts within Cleveland's city limits. After approving the amendment, the council voted unanimously to adopt the short-term rental ordinance governing such operations.
City Administrator Tom O'Bryant said the proposed ordinance contains all of the changes that the council discussed in the work session and the first consideration.
“I think this document has everything the council desires in it. We just amended the zoning ordinance and now we need some regulations for operating and an application for those who want to participate,” said O'Bryant.
Changes made included concerns about some of the terms listed putting too many regulations upon the renters and business owners. This ordinance will still follow life safety codes and property owners will still have to get permits and approval by the city before opening their rentals.
White County Chamber of Commerce President Beth Truelove thanked the council at a meeting last month for working on the short-term rental ordinance.
“With a number of wedding venues that we have and the demand that we have for travel to White County as a whole, that's very important and to offer other options is important,” she said. “Also bearing in mind that this is a business, I think will create balance between the residents of Cleveland and the ability for folks to conduct business soundly and wisely to the benefit of our community and the guests who visit here.”
