Public invited to open clinic planned for Saturday
White County residents ages 18 and up can get a COVID-19 vaccine at an open community clinic this Saturday.
White County Emergency Management and the White County Health Department are hosting a vaccine clinic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 17 at Tesnatee Gap Elementary School (2696 Tesnatee Gap Valley Road, Cleveland). Walk-ins will be accepted, though appointments are recommended by calling 1-888-426-5073.
Organizers said the clinic will use the Moderna vaccine, which requires a second dose at a later date. More information is available by contacting the Health Department at 706-865-2191 or Emergency Management at 706-865-9500.
In recent weeks, after an initial rush of appointment requests while vaccine supplies were limited, the Health Department has been administering vaccines during the week at The Bridge Church on Hulsey Road in Cleveland. Speaking with the White County News on Monday, county Public Safety Director David Murphy said officials are still looking to get more residents vaccinated.
“We’re doing about 200 a day, but we’d like to do a whole lot more than that,” Murphy said. “We really need to get our residents out and get their vaccine if they want that.”
An April 13 report from the Georgia Department of Public Health showed 10,571 vaccines had been administered in White County. The distribution report showed 6,060 residents had received at least one dose – about 21% of the population, with 4,736 residents considered fully vaccinated – about 16% of the population.
Murphy said reports of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county have decreased, but more is needed to keep numbers low.
“The ways to maintain that is to continue with our safety measures right now (wearing mask, social distancing, etc.) and also get as many people vaccinated as we can.”
The county’s seven-day moving average of confirmed COVID-19 cases dropped again over the past week.
The Georgia Department of Public Health’s April 13 status report showed the average at 0.9 daily cases at that time, down from 1.6 on April 6. Recent figures include 3 on March 30, 1.7 on March 23 and 1.4 on March 16.
For the month, there had been 17 confirmed cases reported through April 13. There were 52 confirmed cases reported during March, a notable drop from 186 in February, 656 in January and 672 in December.
DPH lists 2,943 total confirmed cases during the pandemic and 65 local deaths attributed to COVID-19.
