COVID-19 vaccines still being encouraged, cases remain steady

White County has seen a decrease in COVID-19 numbers, following a slight increase, as officials continue to promote vaccine availability throughout the community.

The Georgia Department of Public Health’s May 18 status report showed the average at 0.9 daily cases at that time, down from 1.9 on May 11. Recent figures include 1.3 on May 4, 2.3 on April 27, and 1 on April 20.

For the month of May, there have been 22 confirmed cases through May 18. There were 46 confirmed cases during April, a decrease from the 52 confirmed cases reported during March, the 187 in February, 656 in January, and 692 in December. In April 2020, there were 67 confirmed COVID-19 cases in White County.

DPH lists 2,993 total confirmed cases during the pandemic and 67 local deaths attributed to COVID-19.

A May 18 report from the Georgia Department of Public Health showed 14,042 vaccines had been administered in White County. The distribution report showed 7,656 residents had received at least one dose – about 26% of the population, with 6,690 residents considered fully vaccinated – about 23% of the population.

White County Emergency Management, in partnership with the White County Health Department, sent messages about COIVID-19 vaccines through the emergency notification system on May 17-19.

District 2 Public Health has been reminding residents that the COVID-19 vaccine is available for all Georgians ages 12 and up. The Pzifer vaccine is only one approved for those ages 12-17.

Parental or legal guardian consent is required for persons under 18 years old.

Health Department vaccination hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. (Policies for other vaccine providers may vary. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated its guidance for fully vaccinated individuals, stating they can resume activities conducted prior to the pandemic. They can also generally resume the activity without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by laws or business rules.
