The pavilion at the World City Park on Woodman Hall Road has been dedicated to two former Cleveland City Council members, John Palmour and Edward Young.

A crowd gathered at the April 12 event to remember the two men honored by the naming of the Palmour-Young Pavilion.

“I can remember as a very young, little guy of 4 or 5 years old when this park opened. It was so exciting back then and to now be able to bring my kids back here to play,” said Cleveland Mayor Josh Turner. “Just a bit of nostalgia and just a proud moment this park has been able to serve so many. It’s very fitting that the pavilion will be named in honor of John Palmour and Edward Young.”

Turner said the men, along with a committee, put a lot of work into securing funding for the park and getting it built.

City Council members, current and former, along with family members also spoke about the men, their memories of the park and how grateful they are for it.

“I served with Ed and John, and it was a privilege,” said former council member Annie Sutton. “It’s so nice to see this building being dedicated to them. I want to thank Ms. Connie Tracas also for the many hours she put in to make sure things like this are done and this day is put together in honor of those two gentleman that we will always remember. I’ll never forget them.”

Information provided by City Clerk Connie Tracas states that the idea for a park was presented to the mayor and council in 1988. A City of Cleveland Park and Recreation Board was formed in 1989, and its members raised money for the park, which opened later that year. In 2000, the playground was dedicated in memory of Cleveland Police Officer Carol Leigh Ledford. In 2015, the original pavilion was replaced. In 2018-2019, Girl Scout Troop 11730 helped improve the park by cleaning it up, painting playground equipment and more. A handi-access swing was replaced in 2019 in memory of Doug Allison.

The park is located at 148 Woodman Hall Road in Cleveland.
