A rabid fox in the Arthur Seabolt Road area is the second confirmed rabies case in White County for 2021.

According to Sean Sullivan, White County Environmental Health Manager, on Thursday, Sept. 30, homeowners heard a commotion outside on their porch at approximately 10:30 p.m. When they check it out, they discovered a fox on the porch trying to attack their dog.

"The homeowner stated that when they turned the porch light on the fox fled the porch," Sullivan said. "The homeowner was able to put the fox down and submit it to Environmental Health the next morning."

Sullivan said the fox was sent to the Georgia Public Health Lab in Decatur. The state lab shared confirmation of a positive rabies test on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The dog is up to date on its rabies vaccination and are required to undergo a 45-day observational quarantine, Sullivan said.

Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid fox was located. If you live in this area and have concerns of rabid animal exposure, please contact White County Environmental Health at 706-348-7698 during normal business hours.

Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their domesticated pets for rabies. Please call your local veterinarian for an appointment.
