After suffering their first loss of the season last week, the White County softball team, ranked No. 5 in the latest Class AAA state poll, bounced back with a pair of wins to get back on the winning track.
The Lady Warriors (9-1, 4-1) knocked off Gilmer County and West Hall in region games late last week, and were beating Dawson County on Tuesday before rain and lightning caused the game to be cancelled. The two teams are set to play the makeup game on Friday at 4 p.m. in Cleveland.
East Forsyth, which handed the Lady Warriors' their lone loss last week, also knocked off Cherokee Bluff and sit atop the region leaderboard with a 5-0 record.
WCHS and Cherokee Bluff are both at 4-1 in region, and met Wednesday afternoon in Flowery Branch. Game score and details were unavailable at press time.
The Lady Warriors will host North Hall in a region matchup this afternoon in a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Warriors knocked off Gilmer County 6-3.
Annika Vandiver picked up the win with six strong innings in relief, allowing only three hits, two walks and an earned run, while striking out five.
Gabby Whiddon, who has been one of the team's hottest hitters over the past couple of weeks, had three hits in the win. She also scored two runs and drove in a run. Vandiver had two hits and drove in three runs, while Liana O'Kelly had two hits and an RBI.
Emma Hare had a hit and scored a run. Kate Sartain and Cree Cantrell each had a hit, while Rachel Carter scored two runs and Katelyn Boman scored one.
The Lady Warriors ended the week with a trip to Oakwood to take on West Hall, and brought home an 11-1 win.
Kaylie Holbrook got her first start of the season in the circle, allowing a run on one hit and no walks, while striking three in five innings of work in a game that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Vandiver had two hits, scored twice, and drove in a pair of runs, while Cantrell had two hits, scored twice, and drove in a run. Hare also had two hits to go along with three RBI and a run, and Boman had a hit and scored two runs. O'Kelly and Whiddon each had a hit, with O'Kelly scoring a run and Whiddon adding an RBI. Reagan Dunagan reached base once and scored a run.
