The White County High School drama department is starting performances of Legally Blonde the Musical beginning Thursday, April 21 on the main stage.
This is the musical version of the beloved novel by Amanda Brown and the 2001 movie of the same name that featured Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods. After a brutal breakup with her long time boyfriend, sorority girl Elle follows him to Harvard Law School to show him how serious she can be. Audience members follow her along her journey where she finds she is capable of much more than she thought possible all while looking fabulous in her signature pink. Director Hannah Skelton said, “The more I started looking into it the more I realized, this is one of those movies to musicals where I think that the musical is better than the movie. I think it takes the story and it expands on it, and makes it even better.”
When asked what she was most excited for audiences to see, Skelton said, “There’s not even one part I can say is my favorite. The students have worked so hard, from the set, to the costumes, to like the dance numbers, it’s just been really impressive work.”
The department has been working on this production since January and they are excited to finally show off their hard work. Skelton says the students were the ones that wanted to perform Legally Blonde and their passion for the project shines through. “I thought about it and I was like you know what, we defiantly can pull it off, so lets give them what they want,” she said.
The show runs April. 21-24 and April 28-May 1. The Thursday Friday, and Saturday showings begin at 7 p.m. The Sunday matinees begin at 2:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
