The Fourth of July weekend is gearing up to be a busy one in White County, culminating with the annual fireworks showcase in Helen.
The big event comes on Sunday, July 4, with fireworks over Helen. The fireworks start when it gets dark, usually between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. behind the Alpine Village Shoppes and Helen Welcome Center.
While in town for the fireworks, Helen Police Chief Brian Stephens reminds visitors and residents that fireworks are not allowed on city-owned property, including parks and parking lots. He also suggests that people pay attention to the heat and stay hydrated. There are also no open containers of alcohol allowed. He also suggests that children should ear protection during the fireworks.
Because Helen draws large crowds for the fireworks, Stephens said that it’s important to keep track of everyone in the group. He also added that traffic will be heavy and slow, so drivers should be patient as they make their way into and out of the city.

Several other events are scheduled throughout the weekend. On Friday, July 2, Ground Zero Outreach is hosting “A Night of Praise” in Freedom Park from 6-8 p.m. This event will feature Quez Geter. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic and lawn chair. For more information, visit facebook.com/groundzerocleveland.
The American Legion Roy Head Post 16 will hold a flag retirement ceremony on Saturday, July 3 at 10 a.m. at the American Legion (750 Old Highway 75 S., Cleveland). All are invited to attend.
