The White County Board of Education discussed options for the 2023-2024 academic calendar at its Jan. 25 meeting.

Option 1 changes the winter break schedule to allow students and teachers to have a week-long fall break in October. There would be a half-day on Thursday, Dec. 21, to start winter break, which would run until Jan. 1. Teachers would be required to return for planning on the second and third day of January before students come back on the fourth.

In Option 2, students and teachers would only get two days off in October to allow a two-and-a-half-week-long winter break. Option 2’s winter break would start with a half-day on Dec.15 and run till Jan. 1, and students and teachers would return back from break on the same dates as in Option 1.

“Option 2 is probably more of what we have now, and that is it’s a lot of time off before Christmas,” School Superintendent Laurie Burkett said. “Some teachers really like that, so we didn’t want to take that away as an option.”

The board voted to approve putting both options forward for public and teacher consideration at its 6 p.m. meeting Thursday, Jan. 27. A survey will be put on the White County Schools website (white.k12.ga.us) by Monday, Jan. 31 to gather feedback from the public.
