‘Hotter than Helen Georgia’

Country musician’s newest song inspired by visit to city

It’s been nearly 10 years since singer-songwriter Jacob Vaughan came to Helen as a child on a family vacation – but the memory continues to inspire him. In fact, it’s front and center in his song, “Helen Georgia.”

Vaughan’s new single talks about hitting the road to meet a young lady and riding down White County roads, because “that girl is hotter than Helen Georgia in late July,” as the lyrics put it.

While song seems like it could be drawn from a past relationship, it actually developed after reminiscing about his visit to Helen.

About six months ago, Vaughan says he was sitting at a table with his father as they brainstormed ideas for a song hook. The conversation drifted to memories of his grandfather – who passed away a year earlier – including trout fishing with him on the Chattahoochee River all those years ago in July.

“I remember it being really hot down there,” Vaughn says.

And that’s when the words started coming together.

The Reidsville, North Carolina, resident recorded “Helen Georgia” as a stand-alone single released this month on digital platforms, such as iTunes and other streaming services, where more of his music can be found.

Vaughan, who turns 20 in November, describes himself as a “semi-pro musician” who is also going to welding school. He’s been making money as a country music performer for about five years now, though singing has always been part of his life, he says. He anticipates graduating the summer of 2020 and says he plans to find welding work in Nashville – while still pursuing his passion for singing and songwriting.

Amid a busy schedule including school and a budding music career, Vaughan says he hasn’t been able to make it back to Helen. At least, for now.

“I really would like to go back. It’s one of those vacations I’ll never forget.”
