A fire Tuesday evening resulted in a man receiving life-threatening injuries, according to a public safety report.

Firefighters with White County and the City of Cleveland responded to a report of a structure fire on Stansel Road off Adair Mill Road around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, said White County Public Safety Director David Murphy. Once responders arrived, they determined that it was a brush pile that was smoldering and not a structure fire.

Murphy said a flammable liquid had been used, which caused an explosion that resulted in three men receiving burns. A 19-year-old man with second- and third-degree burns was taken by helicopter to Grady Burn Center in Atlanta with life-threatening injuries, he said. The man, whose identity is not being released pending family notification, is reported as being in stable condition, Murphy added.

A 20-year-old man with first- and second-degree burns to his lower extremities refused treatment and transport, Murphy said. An off-duty sheriff’s deputy who lived next door also received minor burns to his hands while trying to render aid, he said.

Fire personnel were able to extinguish the brush pile and remained at the scene to help with patient care and landing zones, Murphy said. Fire units were at the scene for approximately two hours.
