A man had to be rescued after falling from the rock face of Yonah Mountain on Sunday, Sept. 15.

White County firefighters responded to the call around 4 p.m. about a 55-year-old male falling, according to White County Public Safety Director David Murphy. The man was rappelling on the rock face, lost his footing and fell approximately 100 feet before landing on the first plateau of the rock face.

White County EMS arrived on the scene first, and advised all responding agencies of the patient’s status, location and conditions, Murphy said. Other responding agencies included White County Fire Services, Lee Arrendale State Prison firefighters, CERT REHAB team, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Cleveland Fire Department. A total of 21 responders were at the scene.

Rescue teams hiked into the area, set up a rope system and used a Stokes basket to pull the injured hiker to safety, Murphy said. A helicopter was requested to assist in the rescue, but there would have been a two-hour delay, he said.

The man was taken by White County EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Murphy stated that the man was injured, but none of his injuries were life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.

The rescue lasted 3½ hours.

NOTE: Information about where the man was from was not included in the initial report. The White County News is following up on this information and will update the story when it is available.
