Qualifying for the Cleveland City Council Ward 2 special election is set to begin Monday.

The qualifying period for Ward 2 candidates will be Monday, March 30, through Wednesday, April 1. Candidates will be able to qualify at Cleveland City Hall on Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Wednesday until noon. The qualifying fee is $117.

With City Hall currently closed to the public, only one potential candidate will be allowed inside at a time. Interested candidates that want a qualifying packet will need to call 706-865-2017 in advance. If they happen to forget, they can knock on the City Hall door.

Updates on qualifying will be posted at www.cityofclevelandga.org and whitecountynews.net.

A special election for the Ward 2 seat is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19. The special election is needed following the resignation of longtime council memberAnnie Sutton, who resigned in January to run for mayor after former mayor Shan Ash resigned in December.

Ward 2 includes the southwestern portion of the city, going south from Ga. 115 West and west from U.S. 129 South.

Following Sutton’s resignation, councilman Kevin Stanley was selected as mayor pro tem at a Feb. 3 meeting. He will lead the meetings until a new mayor is selected.

Cleveland’s special election for mayor between Annie Sutton and Josh Turner is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, after being postponed from March 24 due to the COVID-19 coronavirus.
