The Smithgall Rescue Re-Tail Thrift Store will mark its one-year anniversary on Aug. 13 in a different location than when it began, but that’s a sign of good things for the operation raising funds for the Charles Smithgall Humane Society.

The store opened August 2020 in a shopping center on U.S. 129 South, but moved in April to 2276 Ga. 17 in Sautee Nacoochee to a location that almost doubled its space, says store manager Karen Degges.

While there was some initial concern over whether there would be enough inventory available to fill the store, Degges says there was an outpouring of donations and purchasing from community.

“It’s a win-win as far as I’m concerned,” she says.

Rescue Re-Tail was launched as a fundraising effort for the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is no-kill facility and animal adoption center. Like many charitable organizations at the time, the COVID-19 pandemic had limited traditional fundraising, such as the group’s annual yard sale and its golf tournament.

Using an all-volunteer staff, proceeds from the thrift store beyond rent go to support the animal shelter’s needs, such as veterinary bills, Degges says. Though items in stock depend on what is donated, the store features home decor, collectibles, clothes, furniture, books, jewelry, designer purses, vintage items and some obscure and unique items that occasionally arrive.

Current store hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Degges says Rescue Re-Tail is celebrating its anniversary with a half-off sale through Sunday.

Volunteers are needed to potentially extend store hours. Degges adds that monetary donations and items for the shelter may also be brought to the store. Anyone interested in helping can call the store at 706-725-0671.
