Cleveland City Council member Annie Sutton qualified to run for mayor on Monday, Jan. 27.

In doing so, Sutton turned in her resignation letter as Ward 2 council member. In a letter, she thanks Cleveland residents for their support during her time on the council.

“I would also like to thank the members of the City Council and employees of this great city for their support and a job well done,” the letter said. “I/We as a City Council could not have accomplished our goals without each other.”

Sutton ended the letter saying she is praying for continued growth and prosperity in the city.

Sutton has just begun her latest term on the City Council this month after receiving no opposition for re-election last year. In late December, City Council members selected her to serve as mayor pro tem for 2020.

Qualifying for Cleveland’s mayoral special election began Monday, Jan. 27. Josh Turner, who previously announced his intent to seek the office, formally qualified earlier in the morning. Candidates for mayor can register through Wednesday, Jan. 29, through 4:30 p.m. during normal business hours at Cleveland City Hall.

The special election is being held to succeed Shan Ash, who resigned as mayor in December as he was set to become his second term.

More information on the next steps for the Cleveland City Council following this resignation will be in this week’s White County News.
