On Wednesday, March 31, Truett McConnell University’s Martha Rielin and Elizabeth Salmen School of Nursing will conduct a mass casualty emergency drill on the TMU campus from 1-3 p.m. as part of the university’s Disaster Preparedness Week. This will be an interprofessional educational event that includes personnel from the university, Northeast Georgia Health System, City of Cleveland Emergency Services, White County Emergency Services and Air Methods.
Students and faculty from across the TMU campus will participate in a response drill related to an intentional mass casualty incident with multiple injuries. The drill is intended to help students learn how to provide an immediate response to treating a variety of medical conditions.
“Nursing students will work together with various departments across campus and local emergency services to participate in a mock drill within a controlled simulation,” said C. Leigh Ammons, assistant professor of nursing. “This drill will allow our students to respond to extreme situations while practicing their clinical skills.”
There will also be free community classes throughout the week including: Community CPR and AED Drop-in class and Stop the Bleed training. The CPR and AED class, which is a non-certification class, will show basics of each and will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. in the Nix Student Center on Monday, March 29. Stop the Bleed will allow participants proper techniques to stop emergency bleeding. This class will be offered by White County EMS and will be open to a limit of 30 people per time slot. Stop the Bleed will be located in the Nix Student Center Lobby at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. or 2 p.m., and will last 90 minutes to two hours on Tuesday, March 30.
