Last Thursday in Cleveland, two special events took place less than a mile apart. These events were strikingly different in tone and attendance. And yet, each event was vital in their service to White County.
At His Hands and Feet Ministry Thrift Store, cars wrapped around the building, a bumper-to-bumper convoy of people seeking help, and food, many of them homeless. Volunteers from a network of local nonprofits handed out goodie bags filled with hygiene items, water, snacks, and at the end of the line, grocery bags of food. This was compassion at work, an acknowledgment that hunger and hardship persist.
Just down the road, at Freedom Park, a festive, celebratory scene unfolded. The annual Block Party, sponsored by the White County Chamber of Commerce, drew families, local businesses, political organizations, local leaders, and government agencies together under blue skies and colorful tents. Freebies and handshakes were plentiful. Live music played and children laughed while grownups talked business, partnerships, and outreach.
Two events, two realities, one community.
One event focused on immediate needs, the other on growth and connection. But both events were integral to White County, reminding us that a healthy community cares for its many parts. Economic vitality is critical — local businesses are the pillars that support jobs and opportunity. Compassion, too, is critical — meeting people where they are, and how they are, without judgment, and helping, with a dose of dignity.
It’s easy to see these two events, these community gatherings as contradictory, one celebrating success, the other revealing struggle. But these are integral parts of the whole. Because a community can’t truly thrive without supporting those who are struggling. And without citizens engaged in building a strong economy, that support would be unsustainable.
Last Thursday’s events in Cleveland offered us glimpses into what kind of community this is. Turns out, we’re an engaged group of people who invest in each other. Nicely done, White County!
