We should take a moment to thank our law enforcement professionals for their service and sacrifice tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 9, which is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
Here at home, the White County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Cleveland and Helen Police Departments, strive at all hours of the day and night to keep residents and visitors safe.
These men and women in uniform are out in all manner of severe weather, directing traffic when there are accidents or patrolling after a storm. Our deputies and officers respond to domestic altercations that could become deadly scenarios if not swiftly and carefully de-escalated. They meet with the elderly victims of cruel phone or online scams, and help locate lost children or runaway juveniles. Our law enforcement personnel work to get illicit drugs off our streets, and prevent fatalities by arresting drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and other substances.
In our parks, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division is responsible for protecting both wildlife and people. Game wardens investigate violations of wildlife laws, and respond to boating and hunting incidents. This is so people can safely enjoy our beautiful state parks and ensure that our valuable natural resources are kept intact for future generations.
Organizations like the National Police Association and Concerns of Police Survivors urge Americans to thank their local law enforcement, especially because the profession today faces multiple and complex challenges.
The association and C.O.P.S. suggest that people can send thank you cards or letters to local police departments, share positive stories about local law enforcement on social media or participate in a Blue Blood Drive.
The White County News is planning to spotlight our local law enforcement personnel in a special Unsung Heroes section later this month. We plan to put faces to these heroes’ names, and offer our readers some practical information pertaining to our local law enforcement agencies.
We should all take a moment to thank those who take an oath to protect and serve us – tomorrow and every day.
