Our View: Thumbs up, thumbs down

This week, the White County News editorial board decided to give a thumbs
up ̶ also known as a high five, atta-boy or a pat-on-the-back ̶ to the following
individuals and organizations. And, we are giving a thumbs down to
those who should improve their conduct or can do more to help their community
thrive.
Thumbs up to our students who were named to White County High School’s
2025 Homecoming Court and all the groups that participated in the Homecoming parade.

Homecoming Queen Shaylyn Vanidiver and the ladies on her court exemplified
beauty and grace, and in the lithe person of Miss Warrior Emma Windham, athletic
prowess.

Homecoming King Levi Barnett and the gentlemen on the court are commend-
ed for showing leadership qualities, which includes the attribute of kindness.
Kindness is in short supply in many places, but not in White County.

Speaking of kindness, thumbs up to our charitable organizations, like the United
Way of White County and White County Family Connection.
The local United Way is kicking off a fundraising campaign on Saturday. If you
happen by the Walmart, put $1, $5, $10 or more dollars in a volunteer’s bucket.

Our Family Connection just held a fundraising and awards dinner this past
Tuesday night. Dr. James Murphey was given the Marlon Caldwell Volunteer of the Year award.

Thumbs up to our businesses, churches and local governments who formally recognized the sacrifices made by our first
responders, whether it was for last week’s anniversary of 9/11 or for continuing to support our Hometown Heroes throughout
the year.

Thumbs up to the terrific kids, parents, teachers, coaches and volunteers who participated in the White County FFA Local Livestock Show on Sept. 11, at the Agri-science Center on Claude Sims Road. Livestock exhibitors worked hard
over the summer to raise their goats, sheep and dairy cows, and spent hours practicing showmanship with their animals.

Thumbs down to the naughty goat that kept breaking away from the teacher exhibitor to run amok during the FFA show. Cunningham the pig and his goat friend, Biscuit, would be appalled!

Thumbs down to people who drive recklessly on our roads and highways. There have been far too many accidents -
minor and serious - occurng during these glorious, early days of fall.
Please, don’t speed or drive under the influence. And make sure you and your passengers buckle up.

Thumbs up to our first responders who are there on our worst days. Thumbs down to those who purposely hurt others.
