Ridge Road near Helen will be reopened to one lane only while awaiting repairs to repair damage done during a storm last month.

Helen City Commissioner Fred Garmon said at a May 18 meeting that a company that has bid on the project can’t start work for six to eight weeks, so they’re trying to figure out what to do.

“If it’s going to be two months before we start, we’re have to look at trying to have at least one lane open,” said Mayor Lee Landress.

Garmon said they’ve looked at putting up barriers similar that are used on highways, around the collapsed area to separate traffic. Once the contractors are able to start work, the road will have to be closed again.

The commission originally approved closing a portion of Ridge Road last month so that repairs to the collapsed part of the road could be done.

Helen City Manager Jerry Elkins told the News after the meeting the road would be opened to one lane sometime this week. He added that there will be signs posted on both sides one lane road ahead and signs saying which lane is closed depending on which way a person is coming from.
