Former county manager Mike Melton to serve on interim basis
For the second time in a year, White County will be searching for a new county manager following the resignation of Joey Cason.
Cason sent notice to the county Board of Commissioners this past Saturday stating his last day would be Friday, April 1. After a called meeting and closed session to discuss personnel matters on Monday, the county released a statement that commissioners and Cason had agreed that he would be departing later that same day.
Cason said in his resignation letter that it would best for his family to move back to South Georgia at this time.
“I am grateful for the opportunity that you all gave me to take on this challenge,” he wrote.
Cason served as county manager for six months, having started in September.
“We were disappointed to have received Joey’s resignation over the weekend,” said County Chairman Travis Turner. “While Joey was with us only for a short period, we appreciate Joey’s work and accomplishments for our White County community and pray the best for him and his wife, Shelia, going forward.”
Terms of Cason’s employment contract included undergoing a performance review after six months. Turner told the News the assessment had been favorable.
“Mr. Cason just received a very positive six-month review. He accomplished several of the goals set by the Board,” he said.
Prior to coming to White County, Cason served as executive director of the Camden County Public Service Authority. He succeeded Jason Cobb, who left last June for a private sector job after a 14-month tenure.
The county manager oversees daily administration of government, including departments and employees, though the position still answers to the county’s elected body, the Board of Commissioners. This role often provides advice and insight to commissioners, but it ultimately carries out the policy and direction of the Board.
(This only story was updated online to include the naming of Mike Melton as interim county manager, which happened after press time for the March 24 issue.)
