Cleveland City Administrator Tom O’Bryant has been named the city’s new economic development and planning director.
The Cleveland City Council announced the change at its March 7 called meeting. O’Bryant has been city administrator since 2017. O’Bryant, in his new role, will take the lead on city economic development efforts and fostering relationships with businesses. He will work closely with the Cleveland Downtown Development Authority and assist them with permitting, planning and zoning.
“Tom O’Bryant has a strong background in economic development and planning and is the only person that the Council would consider for this very important role,” said Mayor Josh Turner. “The Council has an immense amount of confidence in Tom to attract business and create a business-friendly environment. We are excited about the future with Tom at the helm to attract business and guide the city through these extraordinary times of growth.”
O’Bryant will report directly to the mayor and Cleveland City Council.
Before joining the city government, O’Bryant worked for the White County government as its community and economic development director from 2006 to 2017. Before that, he worked in planning and development with the city of Commerce and Georgia Mountains Regional Commission.
“I am looking forward to this role with the city of Cleveland,” O’Bryant said. “I believe the city, and greater White County community, is positioned for tremendous growth. It is exciting to be able to plan and implement the economic future of Cleveland.”
Cleveland is expected to post the city administrator position soon. O’Bryant will continue to handle city administrator duties until a new one is hired.
