The school board approved Option 1, which has short breaks in October and February, said White County School System Superintendent Dr. Laurie Burkett. There were almost 1,400 votes tallied between the community and staff members in an online school calendar survey.
The 2020-2021 school calendar has teachers returning on Monday, Aug. 3, with classes starting on Friday, Aug. 7. The fall break for students will be Friday, Oct. 16 through Tuesday, Oct. 20, with teachers having off Oct. 19-20. Students, staff and faculty will be out the full week of Thanksgiving, Nov. 23-27. For Christmas break, students and faculty will be out from Dec. 21 through Jan. 5, with Dec. 18 as a half-day and Jan. 4-5 as planning/teacher workdays. A winter break is scheduled for Feb. 12-16, and spring break is April 5-9. The last day of school for students is May 28.
This year the school board decided to vote on the calendar two years out, which means the calendar for the 2021-2022 school year was also approved. That calendar has students starting back on Aug. 6, 2021. A fall break is scheduled for Oct. 15-19, with Christmas break set for Dec. 20 through Jan. 4 for students. A winter break will be Feb. 18-22, and spring break will be April 4-8. The last day of school will be May 27, 2022.
