Two injured in Monday accident

A single vehicle accident on Monday evening resulted in two people being transported to the hospital.

According to Cleveland Fire Department Chief Rick Pruitt, at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 11, they responded to a single vehicle accident on Hwy 115 east that involved a pick-up truck with six passengers. One juvenile, a 10-year-old girl from Cornelia, was transported by air to Scottish Rite Hospital, while Karen Sanchez, 26, of Cornelia was taken by White County EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident. According to the accident report, Jose Duran, 24, of Baldwin was driving the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado. The vehicle was heading west on Hwy 115 and going around a curve to the left. Duran said he remembered going into the curve, but then blacked out. The vehicle crossed the center line and went off the road, where it struck a power pole. The accident report notes that the trooper asked the driver if he had blacked out before, and he said yes.

Cpl. Josh Hedden with GSP Post 6 said the driver received citations related to failure to maintain lane, child seat restraint and seat belt laws.

The accident caused the road to be shut down for a couple of hours while was traffic was detoured so Georgia Power could replace the power pole that was hit, Pruitt said.
