The White County High School drama department will hold performances of The Diviners beginning Thursday, Dec. 2, on the school’s main stage.

“The play is set in the rural town of Zion, Indiana in the 1930s. The Laymon family has a very special boy named Buddy who has a deathly fear of water,” says director Hannah Skelton. “A new preacher comes to town and kinda stirs things up for everybody and tries to help Buddy overcome his fear of water.”

The students and Skelton have been working on the show since August and are excited to share their work with their community.

“I’m mostly excited for the community to see how well the students can act,” Skelton says. “There’s been a lot of really fun musicals, with a lot of singing and dancing and this is the first opportunity they’ve had to do a serious drama.”

This play was taken to the One Act Competition where the group placed fifth. Two of the students were selected for the All-Star Cast Awards: Mollie Cutchshaw and Nealy Webster.

“I have loved working on The Diviners,” Cutchshaw says. “With the story being centered around such a small town, I feel like the cast has grown into a tight-knit community of its own. This play has taught me so much, not only as an actor, but as a person. I believe everyone will be able to find a bit of themselves in this play like I have, and I am so excited to share this experience wit the audience.”

The show runs Dec. 2-5 and Dec.9-12. The Thursday and Friday showings begin at 7 p.m. The Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
