White County News
White County taxpayers can expect to receive property assessment notices in their mailboxes later this month. The Assessor’s Office informed the News that they plan to mail out 19,475 real property assessment notices on June 10.
The majority of White County properties will reflect the same value as last year, according to Deputy Chief Appraiser Jennifer Saxon. Saxon said there was no countywide increase in values for 2025.
Taxpayers who believe the assessed value assigned to their property is unreasonable can appeal the assessed value from June 10 to 5 p.m. on July 25. Be advised that the Assessor’s Office only appraises property values and does not control the amount of the tax bill.
Information gathered by the Assessor’s Office is recorded and transmitted to the Tax Commissioner’s Office so tax bills can be charged to taxpayers based on the assessed property values, according to the Assessor’s Office website. The Tax Commissioner’s Office creates and sends out the tax bills.
“Taxpayers can also apply for homestead this year during the appeal period,” Saxon said. “We accept homesteads all year long, but the normal deadline for it to apply to the current year is April 1. This year the state has extended the deadline for filing due to HB581. For White County residents that extended deadline is July 25.”
HB 581 is a new law that was approved by Georgia voters in 2024, and has gone into effect this year. The new law allows the assessed value on homestead exempt properties to only rise at the rate of inflation, or Consumer Price Index (CPI), each year.
Appeals and homestead applications can be made in person at the Assessor’s Office, located at 1241 Helen Highway, Suite 180, and online at whitecountyga.gov/tax-assessor. Once on the page, select the Property Record Card Search option in the menu on the left. The appeal module will open on June 10 and close at 5 p.m. on July 25. All mailed correspondence must be postmarked by July 25
to be accepted for this year.
