The start of the 2022 high school football season is getting closer and closer with each passing day. The White County Warriors have 85 days until they open the season with a matchup against longtime rival North Hall on Aug, 19.
The Warriors had a successful spring practice under first-year head coach Chad Bennett, and they are looking to take the momentum they gained during the nine practices and scrimmage with Franklin County.
The Warriors will get to work in June, following the first of two mandatory dead weeks during the summer.
“We're excited to build off the momentum we created during the spring,” Bennett said. “I'm looking forward to getting started on June 6.”
Wesley Simonton is the Warriors new strength and conditioning coach, and will also coach the inside linebackers on the field.
Simonton previously coached at Fannin County and Veterans High School near Warner Robins. He was a standout linebacker at Jefferson High School, and was one of the Dragons' team captains on the 2012 Class AA state championship team. He went on to play at Kennesaw State University, but his collegiate career was cut short due to an injury, and he joined the KSU strength staff.
“We'll have Coach Simonton here and let him do his thing,” Bennett said. “We're excited about having him here, and our goal is to continue to get bigger, faster and stronger.”
The Warriors will have plenty to keep them busy during June and July. The team will work out four times a week during the summer program as well attending several passing events and camps.
“In June, we'll focus on throwing the ball,” Bennett said. “We'll compete in some 7-on-7 leagues, and really focus on throwing and catching the ball. Our linemen are going to the Elite Line Camp at Mill Creek. There will be 400-500 linemen there; it's a really good camp. In July, we'll turn our focus on getting ready for the season. We'll do more team stuff, and 11-on-11 stuff. We hosting a padded camp where we can get in a lot of work. Right now we have Oconee County, Jackson County, Fannin County, and East Hall coming, and I'm still looking for a sixth team.”
