After fire struck Cowboys and Angels, one of Helen's beloved restaurants, questions have erupted online as to the cause.

Helen Fire Chief Jody Prickett told the White County News on Thursday that an active investigation into the fire's cause is underway, but answers may be a couple of days away.

Meanwhile, the public, many of whom patronized Cowboys and Angels, have commented on social media that they will continue to support the restaurant's owner, Chris Williams, his employees and the City of Helen which is in the middle of the Oktoberfest tourism season. Williams commented online that he and wife Lauren intend to rebuild their business.

“Tonight, we got knocked down,” Williams posted on Thursday. “Tomorrow, we start building it back better, stronger, and bigger than ever before! Words can’t begin to express the gratitude for the quick action of Helen Fire Department, Helen EMS, and Helen Police Department.”

“To our staff, you are our priority and the heart of Cowboys and Angels Restaurant and Bar,” he added. “To our customers, we’ll see y’all soon. We will get through this together.”

Restaurant patrons, residents and former employees also commented on the fire.

“I’m a resident of Helen,” said Ethan Carnes, who took video of the fire. “I was going back to our shop after playing pool and saw the smoke thinking [the] Troll Tavern was on fire and saw that it was Cowboys.”

Carnes said he is a former Cowboys and Angels employee, and told the White County News he was saddened about the loss of the business.

“Mr. Williams helps a lot of people in Helen,” he said.

“We  love that place,” Bill Kelly commented online. “Awesome folks, food and music. Hopefully they can get back running soon. This is the busiest season now and ahead. We are praying for a speedy and smooth remodel.”

“Chris is good to his employees, and while this will be a setback for all of them I have no doubt they'll come back better and stronger, “ Anna Crumley Nix commented.

Early Thursday morning, the Helen Fire Unit was returning to the station after a call when they noticed the smoke and traced it back to the restaurant. It was nearly 2 a.m. when they arrived on scene. There were no injuries reported.

The damage to the restaurant appears to be extensive inside and outside, but the building still stands. Williams shared photos of the fire and its aftermath on social media.

The White County News will continue to follow this developing story.
