White County Fire Services had a busy Tuesday night when they responded to a calls about a rescue and a fire.

According to White County Public Safety Director David Murphy, White County Fire Services responded to a call at approximately 8:30 p.m. from some kayakers asking for help from the river. Firefighters with Fire Station 2, Swift water 4 and EMS responded to assist in getting the two individuals from the river bank.

"These kayakers had got caught in the darkness of night and could not maneuver to the end point," Murphy said. 

The two people were in the area of 11046 Duncan Bridge Road, and firefighters were able to use GPS coordinates from the callers cellphone to quickly locate them, Murphy said. There were no injuries at this incident.

Authorities also responded to a report of a camper fire on Poplar Stump Road in the Chattahoochee Campground at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Murphy said that some people drove to the Helen Fire Station to report the camper fire, and firefighters with the City of Helen, White County Stations 7 and 3, and EMS responded to the incident. 

"Helen Engine 32 arrived on scene to report a 20’ camper with heavy smoke from the engine compartment," Murphy said.

The fire was quickly extinguished and the units went back into service.
