The City of Helen celebrated Georgia Arbor Day on Friday, Feb. 21, by planting a tall hinoki cypress at Helen City Hall. According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, national Arbor Day is the third Friday in April, but Georgia Arbor day is observed on the third Friday in February because it is too warm in April to plant trees in Georgia. Pictured are Helen Commissioner Jeff Ash, Helen City Manager Jerry Elkins, Brandon Merz (Georgia Forestry Commission), Jack Morgan, Gary Turner, Robert Stewart, Randy Webb, Ira Morgan, Jacob Westmoreland, Chris Estes, Bart Bartlett (Bartlett Landscape Company), Seth Hawkins (Georgia Forestry Commission Community Forrester), and Will Davis (ranger Georgia Forestry Commission). The first photo is from today, Feb. 21, 2020. The second photo is from Arbor Day in February 1977. In fact, Helen City Commissioner Jeff Ash is in both photos. (First Photo/Stephanie Hill; second photo from the White County News Archives)
