It’s almost time for the kickoff to the Christmas season in Alpine Helen with the annual Lighting of the Village.

The event will take place on Friday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. in the marketplatz in downtown Helen, rain or shine. The area fills up fast, so get there early to not only get a spot to see the lighting, but to also enjoy some music beforehand.

There will be a performance from 2-4 p.m., followed by the choir from First Baptist Church of Helen from 5-6 p.m., according to Jerry Brown, executive director of the Alpine Helen/White County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Helen Mayor Cinnamon Spurlock will speak about the 50th anniversary of Alpine Helen and the Christmas movie that was filmed in the city earlier this year. The movie, Christmas Love Letter, will premiere on Lifetime at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21. During the event, Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive by train to visit with children until 8 p.m., Brown said.

Christmas activities continue the next day with the kickoff of the Christkindlmarkt in downtown Helen on Saturday, Nov. 30, continuing Sunday, Dec.1, and Dec. 6-7 the following weekend from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Brown said.
