With candidate qualifying next week for city elections later this year, one race appears to already be forming for Cleveland,  and a Helen incumbent does not plan to seek another term. Qualifying for those elections is scheduled for Aug. 16-20. Election Day will be Tuesday, Nov. 2.

U.S. Senate hopeful Kelvin King made a recent stop in White County to speak with potential voters as part of his “Uncancel America Tour.

The upcoming school year is bringing some new, and returning, faces to White County campuses as school resource officers (SRO). This year, all SROs are White County Sheriff’s Office deputies and will be covering all six of the system’s schools.

The Helen City Commission unanimously approved a 10% pay raise for city police officers, effective immediately, at a July 30 meeting. Commissioner Steve Fowler had expressed concern during a July 20 meeting about the police department being short-staffed.

The White County Board of Education plans to vote Thursday on lowering its millage rate. Finance Director Julie Dorsey told school board members at their July 27 meeting that they will be able to rollback the millage for this year from the current 17.
