Changes coming to Helen streets

Helen’s streets could look different with planned changes to crosswalks and the possible addition of fencing. The Georgia Department of Transportation and Helen City Commission are scheduled to meet Thursday, Jan.

The White County Board of Elections and Registration will hold a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, on the proposed consolidation of the Helen and Robertstown voting precincts.

Talks stall on city homestead exemption

A potential homestead tax exemption for full-time Helen residents generated some talk, but no action, at the Dec. 14 Helen City Commission meeting. The idea of creating a city exemption on top of the one offered by the county government was broached last month and set aside for further review.

Developer planning for new Helen hotel

Plans are in development for a new hotel on the north end of Helen’s Main Street. Alpharetta-based Rhinehart Management wants to build a Home2 Suites by Hilton brand hotel on recently purchased property between The Heidi Motel and Hofer’s of Helen.

Helen to review options for reducing open container violations

Helen city ordinances prohibit the carrying of open containers of alcoholic beverages on public properties – but such instances appear to be happening more often than officials would like to see. Discussion at the Nov. 16 city commission meeting turned to what could be done to address the concern.
