White County’s rate of COVID-19 cases hit a record mark last week, as more testing opportunities have become available. The county’s seven-day moving average of confirmed cases was at 27 cases per day, according to a Jan. 18 update from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

The Cleveland Downtown Development Authority could explore options for adding a mural as part of a downtown beautification effort. At the DDA’s Jan. 13 meeting, White County Chamber of Commerce President Beth Truelove said there have been inquiries about getting mural art in Cleveland.

A rabid skunk in the Walking Horse Lane area is the 1st confirmed rabies case in White County for 2022. According to Sean Sullivan, White County Environmental Health Manager, on Wednesday, Jan. 7, a dog owner found a skunk in his driveway after he heard his dog barking.

  Cleveland resident Don Vickery was in a helicopter crash during the Vietnam War. After 55 years, a report of the incident and the aircraft’s hull led to an unexpected connection with a fellow veteran. Vickery and co-pilot Clifford Richard were transporting troops on Oct. 4, 1966.

Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen co-owner David Jones is being remembered for his contributions as a business leader from the early days of Alpine Helen and as a loving husband and father. Jones, of Sautee Nacoochee, passed away Monday at age 75, after an illness.

Mattie Mizell, the 69-year-old Cleveland woman missing since Jan. 1, was found deceased on Thursday, Jan. 6, the Cleveland Police Department announced. Mizell was reported missing NewYear's Day after she left her home on foot and did not return.
