Public safety officials are offering guidance on fireworks to encourage safe and legal Fourth of July celebrations. According to the Cleveland Police Department, fireworks can be set off on July 3 and 4 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m.

The Fourth of July weekend is gearing up to be a busy one in White County, culminating with the annual fireworks showcase in Helen. The big event comes on Sunday, July 4, with fireworks over Helen. The fireworks start when it gets dark, usually between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

The new pre-k programs in White County School System are off to a good start. At the White County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, June 22, Jennifer King, director of student accountability, told board members they’ve hired two teachers and two paraprofessionals for the program.

The White County Board of Education held their second budget hearing on Tuesday, June 22. There were no changes from the tentative budget board members approved at the April 29 school board meeting. The budget includes a $40 million general fund balanced by estimated revenue increases.

Summer school is underway, and it’s going very well. White County School System Superintendent Dr. Laurie Burkett told Board of Education Members that when summer school talks first began, it was to recover some of the student learning loss that occurred due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As you walk across the pedestrian bridge in Helen you might see locks at the bottom of the bridge, some stacked several locks high. Attaching a padlock to a bridge and throwing away the key has long been a way for some couples to celebrate their romance.

The White County Board of Commissioners held their first budget hearing for the Fiscal Year 2021-2022. Finance Director Jodi Ligon presented the $27,899,196 budget, which includes a general fund balance of $22,494,047.

White County receives AEDs from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation named White County Fire Services a 2021 grant recipient.  The $15,540 grant will be used to purchase 12 Zoll AutomatedExternal Defibrillators(AEDs), which will help ensure our community is safer and better prepared for emergencies.
A boil water notice has been issued on Friday, June 18 for City of Cleveland water customers at the following locations: Ash St, Old Nacoochee Rd, portion of Church St, Yonah Springs Charles Dr., Three-M Court, Woodman Hall Rd, Parkview Dr., Spring St., Brady St, Pine St, Russell St., Dixon Dr., Faulkner St, Clara Bell Dr., Oakwood Ct., Cagle St., Carroll St., and E Jarrard St.
