White County Board of Education Chair Missy Jarrard is seeking a second term after her election in 2016. She is being challenged by Carly Adam. Both are running as Republicans. With no Democratic candidates in the field, the race will be determined in the June 9 General Primary election.

The White County Board of Education will hold a called meeting on Friday, April 17, at 8 a.m. In accordance with the CDC guidelines for the Covid-19 Virus and the code referenced below, the Board of Education will use GoToMeeting, an online platform, to conduct the Board meetings as necessary.

School closure update On Thursday, March 26, Gov. Brian Kemp extended public school closures through April 24. More information on that can be found here. Students will not be returning to White County Schools until at least April 13.

Millage hearings begin for county, Cleveland and BOE

No one from the public attended the City of Cleveland’s first two meetings on its proposed millage – but there was discussion about changing the rate. Cleveland has advertised a millage rate of 6, which is about 1.7 percent over the rollback rate of 5.899.

The next three weeks will be busy, as the White County Commissioners, City of Cleveland and White County Board of Education all hold their millage hearings. Hearings were set to begin Thursday, July 18, at 8 a.m. for the county and 9 a.m. for Cleveland.
