It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s a UFO? When some people hear UFO, they think of aliens, but the term simply refers to an unidentified flying object. And what these objects could be was the topic a recent program at the Cleveland branch of the White County Public Library on Saturday, July 20.

Millage hearings begin for county, Cleveland and BOE

No one from the public attended the City of Cleveland’s first two meetings on its proposed millage – but there was discussion about changing the rate. Cleveland has advertised a millage rate of 6, which is about 1.7 percent over the rollback rate of 5.899.

County split over firefighter grant

The White County Board of Commissioners, in a split vote, has approved seeking a federal grant to help bolster its roster of full-time firefighters. County Public Safety Director David Murphy presented the request at the commissioners’ July 18 called meeting.

Pets of the week for the week of July 22 from White County Animal Control and Charles Smithgall Humane Society. Sunshine, 3-month-old male, is very playful and is looking for a playmate. Odie, a 3-year-old Lab mix, is fully-grown and is looking for a “furever” home.

Child hit by falling tree limb in Helen

A 4-year old child was struck by a tree limb while tubing the river in Helen after a storm rolled through Thursday, July 18. The child was with her parents, said Helen Police Chief Brian Stephens. “They heard the cracking, looked up and a limb fell and struck the child in the head,” Stephens said.
